• Chanel No. 5 : Once when
someone asked Marilyn Monroe
what she wore to bed, she
famously replied, "Two drops of
Chanel no. 5." Gabrielle "Coco"
Chanel had commissioned a
perfumer to come up with a
fragrance that was unique,
expensive, and a combination of
synthetic scents. Over sixty years
ago, in May 1951, she introduced
the resulting perfume to some of
her friends, launching the iconic
Chanel no. 5. The fragrance -- an
aldehydic floral -- has top notes of
ylang-ylang and neroli, a second
wave of jasmine and rose, and
undercurrents of sandalwood and
vanilla scents. Today, a bottle of
Chanel no. 5 is sold almost every
30 seconds.
• The population of the world
will reach seven billion by the end
of October. The global population
will cross 10 billion by 2085. By
the year 2100, 22.3% of people will
be aged 65 or over, up from just
7.6% in 2010. The bulk of the
population growth is expected to
come from the developing world.
Africa's population will rise from
one billion in 2010 to 3.6 billion in
2100. In 1950, 32% of the world's
people lived in today's rich
countries. By 2100, only 13% will.

That's the result of the survey in the
U.S., where 50% of households
would be unlikely to come up with
an emergency fund. And the
highest levels of coping capacity
are found in Canada with 28%,
Netherlands with 28%, and Italy with
20% unlikely to find the funds.

China's population would fall by a
staggering 450 million from its
peak in 2025, to 941 million.
These projections are incredible.
They are warnings as much as
predictions. Sub-Saharan Africa is
by far the fastest growing part of the
world. The consequences could
be severe. The Sahel would be
turned into a desert by the soaring
population of west Africa. China's
dependency ratio --the number of
children and old as a share of
working age adults-- is rising
faster than Europe's, which will
surely require scrapping the
one-child policy. And on.
