appendix for, if it doesn't seem to
matter if we take it out?  It has long
been believed that the appendix is
a vestigial organ, i.e., present in

Doctors routinely take it out
because, if it becomes infected, it
can turn deadly.  Recently,
scientists from Duke University
Medical School claimed that the
appendix acts as a kind of "safe
house" for the good bacteria in the
digestive system and helps to
cultivate new good germs.
Appendectomy is the surgical
removal of the appendix.  The first
appendectomy was performed in
Iowa in 1885.

will be unable to remove your

• The first postage stamps were
issued in England in 1840, and in
the U.S. in 1842.  Stamp collectors
usually specialize, collecting
stamps of one country, one period
of time, or one subject, e.g., birds,
flowers, art.   Value depends on
rarity and condition.   An issue of
stamps that includes a printer's
error may have increased value.

1883, U.S. and Canadian railroad
companies implemented a
system of five standard time zones
so that train travelers would be
able to keep time.
