And That's the Way it Is:
Walter Cronkite (1916 - 2009), was
recently asked if "newscasters are
biased against conservatism. Is
there some truth in the view that
television newsmen tend to be left
of center?"
Cronkite: Well, certainly liberal,
and possibly left of center as well.
I would have to accept that.
. . . And the distinction between the
two terms?
Cronkite: I think the distinction is
both clear and important. I think
being a liberal, in the true sense,
is being nondoctrinaire,
non-committed to a cause - but
examining each case on its
merits. Being left of center is
another thing. It's a political
position. I think most
newspapermen by definition have
to be liberal. If they're not liberal,
by my definition of it, then they can
hardly be good newspapermen. If
they're preordained dogmatists for
a cause, then they can't be very
good journalists. That is, if they
carry it into their journalism.
U.S. health-care changes:
While President Obama has,
seemingly, focused on controlling
costs, the Americans are divided
over the importance of costs vs.
expanding coverage. Which
should the president and
Congress be most focused on?
(1) People who aren't covered by
insurance. Or
(2) Cost of health care. Or
(3) Both (1) and (2).
The health-care industry is
the
biggest-spending lobbying force in
Washington. They spent $133
million on lobbying activities -
pressing their interests - in the
second quarter of 2009 alone.

year of providing information, presented
fairly and accurately, from sources we
can depend upon and trust.
The IRS has been inundated
by the huge number of requests
from taxpayers to come clean for
past tax evasion amid a
crackdown on unreported foreign
bank accounts. The deadline is
September 23rd.
Bernard Madoff was sentenced
to 150 years in jail. His wife must

account for and disclose any and
all of her expenses over $100.
Iran has developed one of the
world's most sophisticated
mechanisms for controlling and
censoring the Internet. The
monitoring capability was
developed for the Iranian
government by Nokia Siemens
Network which is a joint venture of
Siemens AG, the German
conglomerate, and Nokia Corp.,
the Finnish cellphone company, in
the second half of 2008, as
confirmed by Ben Roome, a
spokesman for the joint venture.
Technology experts say Iranian
government's efforts at monitoring
Internet information go well
beyond just blocking access to
Web sites or severing internet
connections. Instead, in
confronting the uprising during the
month of June 2009, the
government appeared to be
engaging in a practice often
called deep packet inspection,
which enables the authorities to
not only block communication but
to monitor it to gather information
about individuals, as well as alter
it for disinformation purposes.
We see more in numbers
than just numbers...
