Have an offshore-account?
As U.S. Treasury officials intensify
their multinational crackdown on
offshore bank accounts, many
wealthy Americans who use them
to illegally shield income are
facing a difficult decision: Whether
to turn themselves in, and if so,
how. They can confess and plead
for mercy. They can quietly file
amended returns, pay up, and
hope that prosecutors won't follow
up. Or they could choose to do
nothing and pray their names
won't turn up. Recently, major
cracks have emerged in what once
appeared to be an impenetrable
wall of secrecy surrounding bank
accounts in such well-known
havens as Switzerland and
Liechtenstein. "Nothing is secret
anymore and no individual should
take any comfort in relying on any
country's so-called bank secrecy
laws." Joining the U.S. in the
investigation are Australia,
Canada, France, Italy, New
Zealand, Sweden and the United
Kingdom, said the IRS. Offshore
tax evasion costs about $100
billion in lost U.S. taxes each year.

Excerpt from a court proceeding:
Q: This myasthenia gravis, does it
affect your memory at all?
A: Yes.
Q: And in what ways does it affect
your memory?
A: I forget.
Q: You forget? Can you give us an
example of something that you've
forgotten?
In the year ending February 2008,
