• The happiest country on earth:
The U.S. government funded a
vast international survey
conducted by University of
Michigan's Institute for Social
Research which found that the
most important element for
happiness with one's country is
the degree to which people have
free choice in the way they live their
lives. Democracy, peace and
social equality all figured high in
the happiness quotient. The top
five countries are:

     1  Denmark
     2  Puerto Rico
     3  Colombia
     4  Iceland
     5  Northern Ireland

Yes, Denmark was found to be the
world's happiest country but is it
also the world's richest? No. It
just goes to prove that money
doesn't buy happiness. The
United States is the world's richest
nation, but is ranked 16th on the
list of happiest countries. The
critical elements the happiest
countries have in common are
their peaceful environment,
democratic way of life and social
equality. The study showed that
freedom was one of the keys in
measuring happiness.
You may want to avoid moving to
Zimbabwe, Armenia, Moldova,
Belarus and the Ukraine as they
are ranked the five most miserable
places.

• The good physician treats the
disease. The great physician treats
the patient who has the disease!

• Alan Greenspan conceded that
he had made mistakes during his
tenure as Fed chairman that may
have added to the current U.S.
economic slump. He said he was
wrong to think the ability of banks to
assess risk and their self-interest
would protect them from mortgage
excesses.

• How prophetic: "I believe that
banking institutions are more
dangerous to our liberties than
standing armies. If the American
people ever allow private banks
to control the issue of their
currency, first by inflation, then by
deflation, the banks and
corporations that will grow-up
around the banks will deprive the
people of all property until their
children wake-up homeless on the
continent their fathers conquered,"
said Thomas Jefferson in 1802.

• In the last eight weeks, scrap
steel prices have fallen 60% to
$400 a ton. Prices for aluminum
scrap has dropped 33%, copper
25% and nickel 15%. Metal
analysts say the prices aren't near
the bottom yet.
