• McMansion is shrinking:
With the U.S. housing market in a
slump and the mortgage market in
disarray, many home-builders are
putting up fewer supersize homes and
offering small floor plans.  That's what
buyers want in an era of high prices,
and tougher financing.

•Federal income-tax brackets for 2008
are estimated as follows:

Tax        On taxable income of more than
rate  Joint filers Single filers

   $      -

  $       -

15 16,000 8,000
25 65,000 33,000
28 131,000 79,000
33 200,000 165,000
35 358,000 358,000

• Chickens: The only animals people
eat, before they are born and after they
are dead.

• Tax professionals are deputized
to police their clients?!  A new tax law
requires preparers of income-tax
returns to be much more cautious about
signing returns that include
questionable or aggressive tax items.
Complex returns will see more
paperwork and increased fees.

• Health care in the U.S. is among the
most technologically advanced and a
large and growing part of the economy.
From 1960 to 2005, the share of
health-care spending in the U.S. gross
domestic product more than tripled,
growing from 5.2% to 16%.  This growth
is likely to continue, with health care
conceivably expanding to encompass
up to one-third of U.S. output by the year
2050.

• Wealth-boomers: Affluent American
middle-class households with net-worth
of between $1 million to $10 million are
projected to grow by 50% by 2010.

• Number of common U.S. species
of birds like robins, crows and blue-
birds is in sharp decline due to West
Nile virus.

•  The shape of the U.S. population:
There are more minorities in this country
today than there were people in
the U.S. in 1910.  In fact, the minority
population in the U.S. is larger than the
total population of all but 11 countries.
The ethnic and racial minorities
population in the U.S. topped 100
million for the first time in 2006.  The
nation is 66.4% white, non-Hispanic.
15% Hispanic.  13.4% black.  5% Asian.
1.5% American Indian or native Alaskan.
And 0.3% Hawaiian or other Pacific
Islanders.  The percentages add up to
more than 100, because some people
identify with more than one race and
Hispanics can be of any race.
California leads the way with a minority
population of more than 20 million.

• Surprising finding:  Breast-cancer
survival rates are the same for women
who have genes related to the disease
as for those who don't.

• Without health insurance coverage:

• Good hearted?  So much has been
said about the goodness of having a
good heart, I say no more.  Here's the
bottom-line finding of a recent
Psychosomatic Medicine study: People
who harbor hostility run an elevated risk
of artery hardening, particularly when
they are older.

• We see more in numbers

than just numbers...
