What's a second? Say in "just a
second." In 1967, the 13th General
Conference on Weights and Measures
first defined the International System
unit of time, the second, in terms of
atomic time rather than the motion of
the Earth. Specifically, a second was
defined as: The duration of
9,192,631,770 cycles of microwave light
absorbed or emitted by the hyperfine
transition of cesium - 133 atoms in their
ground state undisturbed by external
fields. Isn't that mind boggling?
Why does someone believe you
when you say there are four billion
stars, but check when you say the paint
is wet?
Own or rent?
The difference
between the monthly cost of an
apartment rent and the cost of a
mortgage on a single-family home has
widened since 2001. In the chart below,
a ratio of 1 means the cost of each is
identical. A ratio above 1 means renting
is more expensive, while a ratio below 1
means owning is more expensive.
