HEART ATTACKS / TREATMENTS:  Heart attacks occur when the arteries that supply blood to the heart are blocked.  Without oxygen from the blood, part of the heart muscle can die within hours.  Heart attack treatments have two goals:  in the short run to limit the immediate damage to the heart, and in the long run, to reduce arterial blockage.  Treatments include both invasive (or surgical) and non-invasive procedures.  The primary invasive treatments are heart bypass surgery and angioplasty, where both require prior diagnostic surgical treatments.  Drug therapies entail clot-busting (thrombolytic) drugs and ACE inhibitors that reduce the pressure of blood flowing to the heart, as well as therapies to change lifestyles such as exercise, etc.  Over the past 20 years the increase in invasive treatments and the decrease in deaths from heart attacks have been huge in the U.S.  Heart bypass surgery has grown at an average annual rate of 8.4%, and angioplasty has grown from nothing to be even more common than heart attacks.  Deaths from heart disease in the U.S. have been declining at an annual rate of 2%.

HEART TREATMENT: A six-month regimen of folic acid and vitamins B12 and B6 helps arteries from reclogging after angioplasty.

Abigail Van Buren (Dear Abby) said she was at a total loss to reply to the following actual letter:

Dear Abby:

I joined the Navy to see the world.  I've seen it.  Now, how do I get out?

EAT FISH:  The risk of stroke is cut significantly by eating fish, even if you do it only once a month, found a large-scale Harvard study.

THE JAPANESE eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans or British.  The French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans or British.  The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans or British.  The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans or British.  Conclusion:  Eat and drink what you like.  Speaking English is, apparently, what kills you.

Bush's plan is an audacious $103 billion on Iraq:  $100 billion for the war and $3 billion for relief and reconstruction.  Only such U.S. companies as Bechtel, Fluor, and Halliburton, and such NGOs as CARE and Save the Children, are to do the job.

THE NUMBER OF AMERICANS WITHOUT HEALTH insurance has now swelled to 75 million.  That's because of the bad economy and rising costs.

WE SEE MORE IN NUMBERS than just numbers… We see opportunities for you.
