HE ARGUED IN THE U.S. TAX COURT THAT HE shouldn't have to pay taxes that the IRS was claiming he owed, because of "major computer problems" and the "possibility of a meltdown of software" at the IRS. The Tax Court called his argument "irrelevant" and "without merit."

THE WORLD'S 1.1 BILLION TOBACCO SMOKERS are a better source of income to some governments than to the tobacco companies: More than 70% of the average retail price of tobacco products in the European Union goes into government's pockets. In Brazil, the government's take is about 65%. Tobacco taxes account for 6% of German governments total tax revenues. And Chinese government is the world's largest cigarette maker with some 13% of its annual income coming from tobacco sales and taxes.

Not SALSA, not TANGO, it's MAMBO as the name of a new fragrance by Liz Claiborne Inc. The first-ever "Latino" scent for young Americans is to convey a Carlos Santana-like feeling: "play hard but work even harder, a strong love of family, big fiestas, seductive, passionate, edgy, pulsating, spicy, virile, sexy, hip and flavorful." All for describing that Latino smell.

75% OF AMERICANS believe that a national missile defense system will work if President Bush forges ahead.

CHARITABLE GIVING by those in the lowest tax brackets are "generous." But those with over $1 million annual income give less than 12% of what they could afford.

TAX INCENTIVE FOR MURDER? A tax-accountant recently wrote about estate-tax repeal in 2010: "If it is not repealed again for 2011, a 'death- bubble year' will be created in 2010. Let's hope that this potential scenario does not create too great an incentive for the murder of wealthy elderly people near the end of 2010."

TAX SLANG: "ABOVE or BELOW the LINE": Where's the line? It's "the Adjusted Gross Income" or the AGI line on the income-tax return. You know that tax deductions are not created equal. Some are more or less valuable than others - depending on many variables. For instance, and from among other kinds of deductions, above-the-line deductions are more significant since they reduce the AGI, which in turn can affect the amount of many tax credits and other items that taxpayers may claim.

Death and taxes are inevitable. However, death doesn't get worse every year.

AVOID TAX-AUDITS. They are costly and annoying: Using the same information and tax forms, it's quite normal to prepare and present an income-tax return that would bear much less chances of being selected for an audit, while resulting in much less taxes. A tax-accountant has such an expertise and experience!
